For Reels-ies: Molly’s Game

This week I made my way to the local Readings, and like all of us who like to pretend we know anything about films – I’ve been chewing my way through the Oscar nominations. Nothing says fake film snob more than telling someone that you saw a film before it won an Oscar.

Molly’s game was on the cards this time around, and I can honestly say I’ve never wanted to start an illegal gambling ring more. Based on the real-life story of Molly Bloom the story plays out while switching between her court case at the fall of her poker empire, and detailing her rise from failed Olympic athlete to ‘poker princess’.

Jessica Chastain is a god damn delight, but really, when isn’t she? Chastain dominates and you don’t doubt for a second that her character is the kind of woman who could crush you. Carrying a debt sheet of $2.5 million at the end of the film Chastain’s Bloom is continually served to the audience as the kind of woman who doesn’t use hired muscle to collect, as per Bloom’s book. Paired with Elba, who doesn’t manage to steal scenes in the way we’ve come to expect from him, it makes for a compelling story.

The ultimate question you’ll leave having is who the fuck is Player X? There are a couple of different theories out there, but according to the writer and director Aaron Sorkin Player X is an amalgamation of a few celebrities that participated in ‘the game’ that Bloom ran while she was LA-based. That said the clear inspiration for the dominant characteristics of Player X come from the real-life Tobey Maguire. Cera being cast is a stroke of genius as the moment you hear Maguire for the inspiration you can easily see the connection.

In real life Maguire doesn’t exactly come across like a saint in Bloom’s book. He’s detailed as making the sickeningly gleeful call that pops up midway through the film, and once trying to get her to act like a seal for a tip – because apparently that’s who he is as a person.

Overall it’s a decent watch, and one worth adding to the list. 3/5 and because I love you all here’s the celebs we actually know were there, as confirmed by Bloom.

  • Tobey Maguire
  • Leonardo DiCaprio
  • Ben Affleck
  • Nelly
  • The Olsen twins
  • Alex Rodriguez
  • Rick Salomon
