Depending on where you find yourself this winter, chances are it’s damn cold. Wellington is living up to its windy nickname so far this year, so if you’re going to be spending a lot of time inside then you may as well eat your way through some watchable TV.
Here on the bottom of the globe we don’t get access, legally anyway, to the full range of TV offered to bigger places like the US or UK. That said Netflix is still well worth the subscription cost, and if you can lean in on that #leechlife then chances are you’ll be able to use a friend or family members account anyway. So with that in mind here are a couple of series to sink your teeth into, but be sure to check out the Marvel-based ones as well if you’re into your nerd media.
The Good Place
Imagine waking up one day and being told that you’re dead. You’re dead, but not to worry because you got into the good place. Kicker is though, someone somewhere has royally forked up because you definitely aren’t the person you think they are and you’re going to spend the rest of your afterlife trying to not get caught.
Don’t Trust The B- In Apartment 23
The love I have for this show is probably unhealthy but with my bi-yearly binges of the 2 seasons it pumped out before getting cancelled, I couldn’t leave it off the list. Krysten Ritter is a delight as the title “B- in Apartment 23” and almost nothing makes me sadder than the missed opportunity to have her play Jessica Jones exactly the same way. Vanderbeek playing a caricature of himself is also a true delight.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Being locked in a bunker underground isn’t the best way to learn to be an adult. Kimmy Schmidt adapting to be an adult human in New York is the premise for this show, and it’s likely you’ve already heard about it. The ensemble cast really makes the show, but the unrelenting optimism in the face or some pretty real horror makes it worth the watch.
Rachel Bloom is fucking funny, and the songs from this show will stay with you for weeks. Like anyone worth their salt we’ve all done a bit of light online stalking, but the main character in this one takes it to a whole other level. Watch it. Make sure you watch it.
Santa Clarita Diet
Zombies? Check. Comedy? Check. Blood and Gore? Check. Not much more needs to be said here, and with a surprisingly known cast to round it out you shouldn’t miss this one.
People, if you haven’t seen American Vandal yet then you have been missing out. In recent years murder documentaries have been flooding our screens, and American Vandal is the inevitable but surprisingly well carried out mockumentary born from this. If it doesn’t have you quoting that there was no hair on the balls, then you’re dead inside.
80’s hair, leotards and eyeshadow will have you wincing but also kind of jealous. The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW) are simply trying to make a buck in a male-dominated world. It switches between vampy fun and serious gender issues, the whiplash of which working well its in favour. Check it out.
