Cuisine made up of cheese, meat, spices, and pasta is always going to be a winner in my books. It’s for this reason Italian and Mexican rein the supreme of food types, and with their signature booze (wine, tequila) they’re really just the tits.
Giulio Ricatti already has two restaurants in Wellington, both of them earning their place in the Wellington cuisine scene. Cicio Cacio Osteria in Newtown and Franziska in Seatoun are solid and from this it was a safe bet that Bastardo Ristorante, opened July last year, was also going to be a safe bet for the eats.
The eatery on Tory Street is meant to pay homage to the Italian immigrants who settled in New York over the last 100 years, and the Italian-American cuisine is worth the slightly higher price tag when compared to some of the places you’ll find in the CBD. The menu might be a right dick to find, but the location of the place means its an easy walk to everywhere in town.
I ordered the chicken parmigiana and in all honesty it is the best I have ever had, and I have had a lot. If you’ve taken a look at the menu and it’s between this dish and another one then just trust me and get this. The lasagna is OK, and it’s worth getting as well, but the parmigiana is the true MVP.
When you’re doing dessert the menu changes every day based on what’s available, because they have the most adorable and delectable dessert cart I’ve seen in NZ. Leave room, although only a little, because the moment you lay eyes on it you’ll know you need to have one of them.
Ultimately when it comes down to price for what you get it’s worth it. If I was going to recommend a first date restaurant in Welly it’d be this one, as it’s not crazy expensive but it’s nice enough you don’t look cheap. 8/10.
